WHAT IS PEER MEDIATION?

Peer Mediation began in the 2007-2008 school year as a group of specially chosen and trained students here at Chapel Hill High School. Each mediator is dedicated to helping their peers resolve conflicts in a safe, confidential environment and guide those in non-physical conflict toward resolving their own problems. Each disputant is given the opportunity to share "his/her side of the story" and offer a reasonable solution. At the end of the mediation, both sides agree to implement the solution and avoid conflict in the future. This program is designed to create a peaceful environment throughout our school and in turn strengthen our community.

The potential benefits for both mediator and disputant include:

1. Learning to take responsibility for your own actions

2. Learning to get along better both at school and in the community

3. Learning problem solving and communication skills

4. Becoming empowered to solve their own problems.
