The College Board Advanced Placement Program

The Advanced Placement Program is developed by the College Board and is a nationally recognized curriculum. There are 34 different courses that schools can choose to offer through Advanced Placement. These courses are designed to challenge high school students, help them stand out in the college admissions process, and earn college credits while still in high school. Students who meet specific criteria on the AP exams will be able to skip introductory college courses thus saving them and their parents a significant amount of money on college tuition.

CHHS Advanced Placement Magnet Program

Chapel Hill High School launched its Advanced Placement Magnet Program in the Fall semester of 2014, making it one of an elite few in the nation. The magnet program was developed to provide increased opportunities for Douglas County School System students who were looking to accelerate their learning. The AP Magnet Program accepts students through a competitive application process each school year.

AP Capstone Program

Chapel Hill High School added the AP Capstone Program to its Advanced Placement Magnet Program in its third year in 2016-2017. The AP Capstone Program is a diploma program that enhances the AP student's college preparation experience by adding an independent research component. Advanced Placement students who wish to be considered for the AP Capstone Program must take two additional AP courses, AP Seminar and AP Research. These courses are designed to "complement and enhance the in-depth, discipline-specific study experienced in other AP courses," according to the College Board. As major universities increase their emphasis on research at the undergraduate level, the AP Capstone Program will prepare students to enter college with the skills necessary to engage in scholarly, evidence-based research.

In order to obtain an AP Capstone Diploma, AP students must earn a score of 3 or higher in both AP Seminar and AP Research and earn a score of 3 or higher on four additional AP exams. Students who do not earn a 3 or higher on four AP exams, but earn a 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research, will receive the AP Seminar and Research Certificate.
